Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Malm sideboard, which unfortunately wobbles a bit even though all the screws are tight and the floor is basically level. I would like to make the furniture completely stable without major modifications or expensive accessories. Does anyone here know effective methods or practical tips to make Malm furniture more stable? Are there special pads, assembly tips, or tricks that can permanently eliminate this common wobbling issue? Thanks in advance for your help!

The simplest solution is small felt pads under the furniture legs. They often even out minor floor irregularities and prevent wobbling.

The issue with wobbling Malm furniture usually arises because the points of contact with the floor are not perfectly aligned or the floor surface has slight unevenness. To stabilize the piece, I recommend the following steps:

1. First, check if all screws and joints are properly tightened. Frequent opening and closing of the drawers can cause these to loosen over time.

2. Then, inspect the floor contact points: often, one corner is raised due to minor floor irregularities. In this case, attaching thin plastic or foam pads at the affected spot can help. These glide pads are inexpensive and easy to install.

3. If the floor unevenness is significant, consider installing adjustable furniture feet. There are special kits for IKEA furniture that can simply replace the original feet.

4. It’s also important to place the furniture on a stable, firm surface. Carpets and thick runners can contribute to wobbling.

What type of flooring do you have, and have you already taken the furniture fully apart to check its stability from the inside?

It’s great that you’re working on getting rid of the wobbling! 🙂 I had the same issue and used small felt pads, which really helped because they even out any unevenness! :-) It’s super simple and inexpensive, I can definitely recommend it! Some people also use self-adhesive pads—buy a few extra in case you need to fix something again later! Good luck, you’ll surely get it sorted quickly!

Thank you all in advance for your answers! @FeAndreas1, thank you for the detailed explanation. My floor is laminate, relatively even, but like in many rental apartments, probably not 100% level. The furniture is properly assembled; I have checked all the screws. What you mentioned about the foam rubber pads interests me a lot. Do you have any recommendations on how thick they should be or which material is best suited? I don’t want to risk the drawers not running smoothly later due to too much change in the angle. Also, I installed the original furniture legs, but unfortunately, they are not height-adjustable.

Hello Meoso, here’s a brief introduction to stabilizing furniture with minor wobbling issues:

1. Understand the cause: Furniture usually wobbles because not all legs have full contact with the floor. This can be due to uneven flooring or slight manufacturing tolerances.

2. Material choice for shims: Sponge rubber works well because it is non-slip and slightly compressible. The thickness should be between 1 and 2 mm (0.04 and 0.08 inches) to avoid tilting the furniture while compensating for unevenness. Harder plastics (e.g., polyethylene) are less flexible and can improve stability if too thick rubber pads are being used.

3. Application: Cut small strips or rectangles to stick under the affected furniture legs. Alternatively, self-adhesive felt pads are also suitable but mainly reduce noise rather than wobbling.

4. Installing height-adjustable furniture feet is recommended for more significant issues. There are compatible replacement feet for Malm that allow precise millimeter-level adjustment to level the furniture.

Summary: Use thin sponge rubber strips about 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) thick, preferably with a non-slip underside. This should usually fix the wobbling without affecting drawer operation.

Good luck!
