ᐅ How can I install Billy shelves in rental apartments without using wall anchors (dowels)?

Hello everyone,
I am moving into a rental apartment soon and want to set up one or two Billy bookshelves there. Since I usually cannot drill holes or use wall plugs in rental properties (or at least do not want to make any permanent damage), I am wondering how to securely fix the shelves to the wall without drilling.
My main concern is stability and safety – the shelves should not just stand freely but have a firm mounting to prevent tipping or wobbling when loaded. Do you have any tips for alternatives to wall plugs, perhaps special adhesive solutions, tension systems, or other mounting methods suitable for rental agreements?
Thanks in advance for your experiences and ideas!

As an addition:
If you don’t want to drill into the Billy shelf, avoid adhesives with aggressive chemicals that could damage wall paint or wallpaper. Many rental agreements have strict rules regarding this.
Tension systems work well but depend on the condition of the floor and ceiling surfaces (e.g., smooth vs. rough). Test the system beforehand to ensure it secures properly.
Another option is a combination of a freestanding shelf with a wall stopper featuring a non-slip edge protector that prevents shifting without the need for glue or drilling.
Pay attention to the maximum load capacity of each mounting solution, especially if you plan to store heavy books.

It is also worthwhile to use so-called furniture anchors, which are fixed in place but only with adhesive pads or attached to existing furniture pieces. These secure the shelf against tipping without the need to drill into the wall.
Make sure that no impact or leverage forces act on the fastening to prevent it from coming loose.

Great topic as always! 🙂
I totally understand the feeling of not wanting to drill holes, especially in rental apartments. I recently saw tension shelves at a friend's place that look really modern and are very sturdy.
A quick tip: If you want extra stability, lightly attach the back of the shelf to the wall with double-sided tape. It increases safety without causing damage!
Good luck, and let us know how you decide!
