Hello everyone,

I have been searching for days—does anyone know of any planning software up to about 200€ (approximately $215) that could help me with my self-build project? I’m not looking for professional CAD drawings.

I bought software for 20€ (about $22) at a general retail store, but I threw it straight in the trash.

I would appreciate any tips—maybe some of you are using software and could share some advice.

Best regards,
Daniel

Google Sketch Up

is more for visualization than for detailed planning...

You can easily skip dimensioning in the early drafts,
since this isn’t about social housing or floor area ratios,
otherwise you’d be disqualified from the competition right away.

Form follows function,...

Yes and no, it works quite well for planning, although it can’t be compared to the CAD programs used by architects. However, it’s perfectly fine for initial planning. You can also handle measurements. We took the exterior floor plan of our house and drew the interior walls with SketchUp, then printed it out to show our architect as a basic concept. After that, we reviewed what was feasible. Once we received her floor plans, we adopted those, furnished them, and made further changes as needed. I tried various home design programs, and I liked SketchUp the best. Sweet Home 3D was also okay but had some minor issues with accurately scaling floor plans and handling sloped roofs. For first drafts, it’s definitely sufficient, though it became more complicated when furnishing and making walls transparent.

Hi, I can recommend Cadvilla. I have the Basic version, it was very quick to get started, and my friends are also impressed with it. I’m happy to help with any minor questions.

Hi,
I have Architekt 3D – the most expensive version (professional?). After some initial difficulties, I’m getting along quite well now. The 3D visualization is great because it really gives you a good sense of what the finished building might look like.

What is not so good: the dimensioning and area calculation do not take wall thickness into account. At least, we didn’t find any setting for that. Otherwise, it’s quite resource-intensive and somewhat outdated. No support. You might think it’s rubbish. But comparable software is often even worse or much more expensive.

I’m happy to offer tips if you run into initial problems.
Good luck!

A topic that is always interesting for people who want to put their ideas on paper or computer.
For my initial drafts (which were sent as ideas to the general contractor with architects), I personally downloaded SweetHome 3D.

By the way – this thread is from 2010 – so the original poster probably won’t be interested in our replies anymore.
