Solid Wood Fence
Hey Madmax
We also have a fairly large property and asked ourselves the same question. A “chain-link fence” 😀 just seemed really terrible to us. It doesn’t look nice, but cheap.
So we decided to go with a wooden garden fence instead. Overall, this turned out to be a very cost-effective solution.
There’s probably a sawmill or carpentry workshop near you. You can ask them about the price of slab boards (the cut from a tree, or whatever it’s called :confused 🙂. Then you just need round wooden posts to drive directly into the ground, or square posts with matching post holders (these are available to drive in or to set in concrete at hardware stores). We’ve had a fence like this for 3 years now and are quite happy with it. Not even our big dog manages to get out because with this system you can adjust the height as needed. However, you really need to find an affordable carpenter who supplies these slab boards. It’s just a few phone calls. Also, it’s definitely worth comparing prices on the post holders at hardware stores given the quantities involved…
I hope this helps you a bit
Cheers, Dani

That sounds pretty good.
We will also be moving into our semi-detached house soon, and we have a dog (Golden Retriever) as well.
Our distance is only about 20 meters (65 feet), but I think the idea with the thick boards is great.
How high is your fence, and how many boards do you have stacked vertically?
Isn’t that also called a Bonanza fence?

Fence and Dogs...
I think your fence height is probably a bit too low. For example, we have two German Shepherds. A safe fence height for those dogs is 1.80m (6 feet)! However, we preferred to build privacy fences, and partly double-wire fences. Our property is 210m² (2,260 square feet). So it wasn’t an inexpensive solution, but it is a safe one...

We installed 4 boards with some spacing between them, one above the other. It looks quite good. We also have two large mixed-breed dogs (about the size of a German Shepherd), but so far, we have never had a problem with them escaping over the fence.
They are actually outside in the garden almost all day. We bought the posts a bit taller just in case, and if necessary, we can still add a 5th row of split boards to easily raise the fence.

Hey mate,
We have very nice neighbors here. We live in a very rural area. If we used a privacy screen for a fence, everyone would think we're crazy. Also, if you choose a very sturdy privacy screen, it's not really an affordable solution. Especially if you have to enclose a large area.
