Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the attic that I want to convert for my son.
It concerns how to connect the vapor barrier of the floor to the gable and eaves walls, where I am currently quite uncertain. The intermediate ceiling to the attic consists of wooden rafters with insulation installed between them (a very basic standard). The attic, which is still uninsulated so far (a cold attic), was made walkable by me back then with a simple battens system (tongue and groove) directly on the wooden rafters. There is a good gap of at least 60 mm (2.4 inches) between the battens and the insulation, so air can still circulate there.

Now that I want to insulate and convert the attic into a heated living space, I am wondering how to make the wooden floor airtight. Of course, I can insulate and seal the gable, eaves, and roof areas well with insulation between the rafters and a vapor barrier to make them airtight. But the floor area is causing me some concern.

Should I now simply install a vapor barrier on top of the battens? And connect it to the vapor barrier on the eaves and gable walls? Then lay floor insulation boards on top of that? As I mentioned before, a radiator will be installed in the new living space.

I really need good advice here so I can continue planning.
Thanks in advance.

Greetings from Lübeck 🙂
