Hello

How can a layperson tell whether Fermacell (gypsum fiberboards) or drywall (gypsum plasterboards) has been installed in the attic?

Thank you

Gypsum plasterboards (often called drywall) are boards made of gypsum covered with paper, so the outside looks and feels like paper. The gypsum inside is very white. If needed, you can test this with a knife in a concealed area. In bathrooms and similar rooms, these plasterboards are usually green on the outside.

Gypsum fiberboards (such as Fermacell) are boards where gypsum and paper fibers, among other materials, are mixed and compressed into a single homogeneous panel.

Hello
thank you for your reply.

I chipped off a small piece at one corner; it was very easy to do.

I heard that Fermacell is not that easy to break.
I also tore off a bit of the outer paper layer, which was also very easy.

Fermacell was contractually agreed upon.
My question is: would this actually be a problem,
or would it not make much of a difference?

Then it was probably not installed correctly in your case. Drywall (gypsum board) is cheaper than Fermacell. It is also not as load-bearing as Fermacell when you want to hang something. Just try googling the difference between drywall and Fermacell. Both have certain advantages and disadvantages.
But if drywall was installed instead of the contractual Fermacell boards, the construction company saved money. You should address this and discuss a price reduction. Replacing everything would probably be too much effort. In the bathroom, the green drywall boards should have been installed.
This is my amateur opinion. If anything is incorrect, please correct me.
