Hello dear forum readers,

we have just started renovating a house from the 1970s.
Our bedroom and living room border the neighbor’s garden. The neighbors like to party or are not very quiet (or we are noise-sensitive 🙂). In any case, from the beginning we want to do everything possible to protect ourselves from noise as much as we can.

Is it worthwhile to install high-category soundproof windows (4-6), or would that be a waste of money because noise also passes through the exterior walls? And if so, is it possible to make the exterior walls more soundproof without spending a lot of money? Would it be worthwhile to hire a structural engineer to inspect the house and assess the options?

Yesterday we wanted to look for soundproof windows online (category 4) but got discouraged by the many options and information, so we didn’t just order something right away, especially since installation mistakes can happen.

In any case, many thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!

No one here can give you a reliable answer to these questions because nobody knows your house or the properties of the individual building components.

I would recommend looking for an expert, for example through the Federal Association of Independent Experts, who has extensive knowledge of renovating older buildings. Arrange an on-site appointment with this expert and then discuss the different options after they have assessed the existing conditions. A structural engineer is the wrong contact; if the structural calculations need to be revised due to renovation work, the expert will inform you accordingly.

Hello building expert, thank you very much for your response. Completely understandable. That is how we will proceed. Best regards.
