Hello,

In the kitchen, we have tiles (shown in the picture as gray) that meet the open living room area with vinyl flooring (light brown in the picture). The kitchen features an open counter whose sides (dark brown in the picture) extend from the tiled area into the vinyl section.

Abstract interior scene: gray rectangle top right on orange floor background with dark lines.

The height difference here is about 2-3mm (0.08-0.12 inches) at most, and because of these two wooden panels, it doesn’t make much sense for us to level the entire living room floor by that 2-3mm (0.08-0.12 inches).

Do you have any ideas on how to bridge these sections (about 20cm (8 inches) long)? Using transition strips? Sealing with silicone, acrylic, or something else?

Hello questioner. No, it really wouldn’t make sense to level the entire living room just because of the small height difference.
The usual approach is either to grind down or bevel the 2mm (0.08 inch) step in a ramp shape, or (which is also possible) to apply a ramp-shaped skim coat starting from the height difference towards the living room.
Now, a height difference of 2mm (0.08 inch) is quite small. There is a general rule of thumb that for each centimeter of height, you multiply by a factor of 0.6 (the result is then in meters) to determine the ramp width needed to avoid noticing the height difference when walking.
So, according to [0.2cm x 0.6] = 0.12m (0.4 feet) width—which means you would need to apply about a 1.5cm (0.6 inch) wide ramp leading into the living room.
In commercial construction, well, sometimes the height differences are much greater...
