ᐅ Painting a (concrete) ceiling – is surface preparation necessary?

Hi everyone!

We have a precast concrete ceiling (Filigran slab) and since we decided to do the painting work ourselves, we also need to prepare the ceiling...

There are many different approaches out there.

Priming – filling (joints and surfaces) – applying painting fleece – painting is probably the most thorough and best method.
A friend told us that it’s often enough to just fill the joints and then simply paint... Is this a viable option? Has anyone tried this themselves?

Thank you very much

Did you use silicate paint or regular paint? And which MIPA store did you go to?

@M4rvin
Cleaning the ceiling is really a huge mess and usually costs a bit more per m2 (10.8 sq ft).

I have no idea, the master painter took care of everything. I only had to complete my basic tasks on time. Everything was from MIPA, including the primer.

Yes, with us.
However, our bricklayer also filled the joints. He did a very good job.
We primed and painted. Not using standard ceiling paint, but painter’s paint from a wholesale supplier for professional painters.
Painted twice, it looked very blotchy under spotlight. In real life, you can’t see anything – we did a good job.

It is important that if it is silicate paint, you apply it wet-on-wet. That means not painting the corners first, but covering all areas as quickly and broadly as possible. Additionally, using a thinner can help extend the working time.

So, I’ve cleaned the joints and applied primer. I tested filling two small joints with Rotband filler. Let’s see how it looks tomorrow.

Do you have to apply primer to the entire ceiling? And if you’re filling the whole ceiling, do you just level it off? So, just to close all the small holes?

@M4rvin

How did it turn out for you in the end? I’m about to paint my concrete ceiling as well.
