Hello everyone,

(Hope I don’t get banned right away for posting a bunch of crap…)

Some animal is leaving a pile of droppings on our lawn almost every night, strangely always in almost the same spot (plus or minus 2 m (6.5 ft)). At first, I suspected the neighbor’s cat, but the pile seems too large for a cat, right? Also, don’t cats usually go into garden beds rather than right in the middle of the lawn?

Grass in the garden with dog poop

Question: Can anyone tell me if this could still be cat droppings? If so, I guess a conversation with the neighbors is due.

I’m getting tired of cleaning it up every morning, and even more worried that my kids might step in it while playing or that my son might try to taste it. My nephew once caught worms that way, which was quite unpleasant. That really shouldn’t happen.

And if it’s something else: what could it be and, above all, how do I get rid of it?
Barbed wire, spring-loaded traps, anti-aircraft guns, nuclear bomb?

Best regards,
Andreas

Live traps often don’t work with cats – they are not dumb.
And if you do manage to catch the cats,
How long do you plan to keep them confined?
How will you find the owner? The cat might come from a neighboring town.
How will you take care of them during that time?

Diapers, vinegar, pepper, coffee grounds, water, and certain plants said to repel cats may help.

You could also download recordings of angry tomcats yowling from the internet and play them when the cat shows up. Mine regularly jumps behind the sofa when she hears that. Better than dog barking.

Hello Snowy,

why not catch it in a live trap?
Once the owner is identified, the cat can be returned. Then they should make sure it doesn’t defecate in the garden anymore.
The owner is responsible. How they handle it is their problem.
I can think of other methods to discourage the animal from using the garden as a toilet.
Cat owners can be strange creatures. Their pet causes damage, and they say there’s nothing they can do about it.

If you caught my pet in a trap and brought it to my door, I would... well, you really don’t want to know what I’d do next...

But yes, we’re all glad you didn’t just kill it right away!
However, you wouldn’t be so welcome as a neighbor with me around.

And your view that cat owners are strange is understandable given the situation. I don’t know any other animals allowed to roam freely like this...

Dog: trained and obedient
Bird: usually not free
Horse: kept in a stable
Hamster, rabbit, etc.: not really obedient either, but kept in cages

Our cat is part of our family; if you hurt it, from our perspective you are hurting a family member...

Hello Snowy,

Actually, I would like to hear it. So, go ahead. What would you do? Please express it clearly. Or is it just a violent fantasy that you would never put into action? Due to fear of repercussions?
By the way, I handle such threats quite well. So far, they have only been words (with very rare exceptions), without any action.
