Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling a Billy bookshelf and am wondering how to effectively reduce the assembly time. It’s not just about speed for me, but also about completing the build with as few errors and as little stress as possible. I have assembled this bookshelf before, but this time I don’t have much time and want to avoid unnecessary mistakes, such as incorrectly installed wall anchors or misunderstood assembly steps.
I’m therefore interested in proven tips, tricks, or special tools that have helped you assemble a Billy bookshelf faster and with fewer issues. If there are differences between certain models or versions of the Billy bookshelf, it would be great if you could mention that briefly as well. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend first systematically sorting all the parts and collecting all screws and wall plugs in small containers. This will help you avoid long searches during assembly.

Secondly, use a cordless drill with the appropriate bit, which saves a lot of time compared to a screwdriver.

And very importantly: read the instructions all the way through before you start – this will help you avoid mistakes.

That is a very helpful tip. Besides sorting, I recommend optimizing your workspace. A large, flat table or, if necessary, a clean area on the floor with enough space makes arranging the parts and assembly easier.

For the Billy shelf unit, it is important not to attach the back panel too early. It often covers the screw holes and limits your ability to make adjustments.

A cordless drill is almost essential, but make sure to set the torque correctly to avoid over-tightening the screws, which prevents material damage.

There is also the option to pre-drill the dowel holes with a small drill bit before assembly if the wood is too hard – this saves frustration.

Could you perhaps specify exactly which model you have and where you have encountered the most difficulties so far? That would help make the advice more targeted.

Hello bupierre64,

I can understand your frustration well – the Billy bookshelf is indeed one of those classics that, despite its seemingly simple construction, sometimes takes more time than expected.

In addition to the points already mentioned, I would like to add:

- Allow enough time: it’s better to work slowly and carefully than to rush and assemble parts incorrectly.

- Sort the screws and parts not only by size but also by function. Some look similar but have different lengths or diameters.

- A tape measure and a small square can help align the shelf properly before you fasten everything permanently.

- If possible, having someone to hold parts or assist with preparation can greatly shorten the assembly time.

- Pay attention to the sequence of assembly steps in the instructions – don’t skip any steps, even if they seem unimportant.

How about your tools? Do you have a cordless drill or tools beyond the screwdriver included with Ikea?
