ᐅ Accessible Building – Bungalow or House with Stairlift?

Hello, sorry for starting another thread.
Since I use a wheelchair, I need to build barrier-free. We have now secured a 520 m² (5,600 sq ft) plot of land. Naturally, the question is how to build: a bungalow or a house with a stair lift or an elevator.
We initially planned a bungalow of about 130 m² (1,400 sq ft), but since that is probably much more expensive, I am now considering a house with a lift again. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much such a lift or elevator costs, and more importantly, what ongoing costs I would have regarding electricity consumption, maintenance, inspections (e.g., building permit / planning permission), etc.

I hope someone here can help me.

Best regards,
Marcel

The question is, if you build a bungalow, you practically have a huge free area on the roof slope where we would place the heating system, for example, but there’s still a lot of space left. Or you build a house with an elevator.
Now good advice is expensive, of course.

I would recommend planning a small single-family house with an elevator. From my point of view, it doesn’t make sense to leave about 100 m² (1076 sq ft) of floor space unused, nor to put the bathroom and the children in the attic. What if you’re home alone and *quickly* need to get upstairs? Incidentally, the difference between the two options is likely around 30,000 euros; with that, you can buy an elevator and have it maintained for many, many years 😉

Smaller elevators are no longer prohibitively expensive; corresponding maintenance contracts are also affordable. Furthermore, there are funding programs specifically for this case, as has been correctly pointed out here.

So, an elevator costs €24,000–28,000 plus an ANNUAL maintenance fee of €200, and there are additional inspection fees and electricity costs!!! Our construction company says that building a single-family house is not worth it at all because of this.

Is your contractor a recognized expert in the field of accessible building?
If not, I would look for someone who truly has experience in this area and can therefore provide both constructive and creative suggestions.

That’s nonsense!

Invest some money in a "subsidized" photovoltaic system; then the electricity operating costs become more manageable. An annual maintenance is also in your best interest!

Then I would question the construction company 😉

We planned all the rooms on one floor. Since we didn’t want a bungalow, a separate apartment will be located in the attic. It can be rented out or possibly used for caregivers in the future.

A stairlift is an option for me only if there is a need in an existing building. Generally, you need two wheelchairs or always a helping hand.

He certainly doesn’t have the most experience in the field of accessible building.
