Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Billy bookshelf and have a specific question that probably requires some practical advice from you. Specifically, I want to attach the back panel of the bookshelf without using screws. My question is: What alternatives are there to securely and stably fix the back panel of a Billy bookshelf without using screws?

I prefer to avoid drill holes or visible fasteners that would affect the appearance. At the same time, the back panel needs to be firmly attached so that the bookshelf remains stable and the back panel does not develop loose spots. What tips and tricks do you know, maybe using tape, clips, special adhesives, or other materials that have proven effective?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences and approaches!

A casual thought on reversibility 🙂

How about magnetic tape? You could attach magnetic strips to the back panel, with corresponding strips fixed on the shelf. This way, the back panel stays secure but can be removed if needed.

Just a small DIY idea that can be done with minimal materials. The magnets are so thin that they can remain almost invisible ;-)

Might sound unusual, but I once used something similar on storage boxes.

Technically interesting, but it requires metal or ferromagnetic components on both sides. The BILLY back panel is hardboard, so it is not magnetic. You could stick metal strips onto the back panel, but the question is whether that would provide better stability compared to other methods.

If the load capacity is limited, this method can work. It is less suitable for high loads or strong forces.

Tesa Powerstrips are removable and provide reliable hold for short periods

That is probably the best practical solution for rental apartments, with the drawback that the shelf should not be loaded too heavily.

In summary, for reversible mounting I see the following options:
- High-performance adhesive tape or power strips for light loads
- Clamping systems or frames for securing by tension
- Magnetic system (with metal attachment)

Keep in mind that especially when using a back panel to stabilize the shelf unit, sufficient fixation and compression are always important.
