Good morning everyone,

I have an issue with several drawers in my IKEA Malm dressers where the sliding action is either stiff or the drawer no longer closes properly. Upon closer inspection, I suspect that the metal runners are bent or worn in multiple places.

So my question to the community is: Are there any proven tips and methods for faster repairs of Malm drawers? I'm particularly interested in which tools and replacement parts are truly useful, whether there are specific repair tricks for the tracks or rollers, and how to minimize repair time.

If anyone has experienced similar damage and didn’t just replace entire runners but found a quicker or more efficient approach, I would appreciate your advice and experiences!

Hello TILLIX,

I understand your situation well; these drawer issues are quite common with Malm. Here is an overview of how I usually approach them:

1. Preparation: Gather your tools (screwdriver, wrench, fine sandpaper, some WD-40 or silicone spray).

2. Removing the drawer: Pay attention to the clips on the slides to avoid damage.

3. Visual inspection of the rails and rollers: Often the metal guides are bent, or the paint/coating is scratched.

4. Correction: Carefully straighten bent parts with pliers, applying gentle pressure to avoid breaking anything.

5. Cleaning and lubrication: Thoroughly clean the rollers and rails, then lightly lubricate them with silicone spray.

6. Test run and readjustment: This is important to check if everything runs smoothly again.

It is especially important to rely on the original replacement parts if something is completely broken. Cheap alternatives often make the problems worse.

Speed often comes from good preparation and the right tools. It also helps to know exactly where the problem is – not all slides are affected the same way.

If you like, I can later share some specific dos and don’ts that have helped me.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to follow up on Nabla64’s post and provide a more detailed explanation of the repair process, as in my experience there are many finer points to consider.

First and foremost, an accurate diagnosis is crucial. Small bent hooks on the metal profiles or debris in the track area can have a significant impact on smooth operation.

I recommend the following detailed steps:

1. Completely remove the drawer and take off the guides from the cabinet side to inspect all the small areas thoroughly.

2. Then clean the rails from dirt and adhesive residues – a lint-free cloth with a bit of spirit (denatured alcohol) is very helpful here.

3. Carefully straighten any bends with a combination plier. Be patient and avoid applying too much force at once.

4. Check the original small plastic rollers: if they are cracked or chipped, replacement is the only option (IKEA sells these separately, usually costing less than 5 euros each).

5. To make the guides run smoothly again, I personally use a special dry lubricant (graphite powder) instead of WD-40, as the latter attracts dust and can cause the mechanism to stick in the long term.

6. Check the drawer’s alignment and closing action: sometimes the guides are just misaligned, which creates the impression of a defect.

This is very important, as mentioned here, because plastic or thin metal parts do not withstand much stress.

Finally, a question for TILLIX: What kind of defect exactly are you dealing with? Is it only difficult closing, or is there a clicking sound? This makes a big difference for the approach.

A simple tip to speed up the process: always repair one drawer at a time, not several simultaneously. This way, you keep track better and avoid mistakes.

It is also helpful to mark the slides beforehand, so you can reassemble them correctly as quickly as possible.

Summary and Conclusion:

- Malm drawer issues usually result from worn guides, damaged plastic rollers, or misalignments.

- Quick repair depends on accurately identifying the problem before removing the drawer.

- Tools: screwdriver, pliers, sandpaper, appropriate lubricant (preferably dry, e.g., graphite).

- Repair: avoid bending parts; it’s better to tap gently and avoid applying excessive force.

- Replacement parts should be original.

- A systematic approach (completing one drawer fully before moving to the next) saves time and reduces errors.

I hope this provides clear guidance for your repair.
