Hello,

I would like to avoid additives in the concrete for our waterproof concrete basement (WU) as much as possible. I have heard different statements from various construction companies, ranging from "no additives are necessary" to "I cannot influence that, the concrete plant decides" and even "there's a lot of chemicals in it."

Are additives necessary, or can they be completely avoided? Can the construction company order a specific mix from the concrete plant, or do they have to accept whatever is currently being offered?

Thank you for your answers.

Like almost everything, the composition of waterproof concrete (WU concrete) is regulated. According to DIN 1045-2, it must contain at least 280 kg of cement per cubic meter (280 kg/m³ (about 18.5 lb/ft³)). This cement must have a minimum compressive strength of C25/30. However, I always use C30/37.

The concrete mix can be specified at the batching plant, and then only those ingredients are included, meaning cement of a certain quality, gravel, and water. Additives are only included if requested or necessary. Once the concrete has set, it is safe for use in residential buildings.

Any off-gassing would also reduce its durability – after all, being solid is the primary requirement for concrete. So, @unser_schloss, what objections do the advisors raise?
