Hello everyone, I want to make and install a shelf myself inside my Pax wardrobe. I’m not just looking for simple shelving boards, but rather a sturdy and precisely fitting shelf that I can move or remove as needed. Ideally, the solution should be compatible with the existing structural profiles of the Pax system and have a high load capacity. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to build such a shelf myself? Which materials and fasteners are practical? And how can I get the measurements exactly right? I look forward to your answers.

If you have specific load requirements, please provide the expected load so that the material and reinforcement can be precisely adjusted.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I plan to store mainly clothing, light boxes, and a maximum of 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per shelf. It won’t exceed that. It is important to me that the shelf can be moved without complicated modifications in case I want to adjust the storage space later. Metal frames sound interesting, but I would prefer a simple and understated look. What about shelves made of plywood or film-faced plywood? These are often used in construction for flooring and are considered very stable.

What about shelves made from multiplex plywood?

Multiplex plywood is great – stable, moisture-resistant, and durable. If you want a neat finish, you can cover the edges with paint or matching edge banding. It’s important to protect the edges well, as most multiplex plywood is only sealed on the flat surfaces, so moisture could penetrate at the edges. For fixing, the standard hanging tool from the Pax system is sufficient, allowing you to move the shelves anytime.

Only 18 mm (0.7 inches)? In my opinion, that's quite borderline if you want to store heavy items on it. Why not just go for 22 mm (0.9 inches)?

18 mm (0.7 inches) is sufficient for the loads mentioned in the original post (10-15 kg / 22-33 lbs), provided the shelves are properly supported. A longer shelf without additional cross supports could indeed sag. For higher loads or deeper shelves, 22 mm (0.9 inches) may be advisable.

What about shelves made of plywood coated with phenolic film?

Plywood coated with phenolic film is quite sturdy and a good choice for a moisture-resistant solution. If cut carefully and the edges are sealed, it’s a durable option.
