Hello everyone, I bought a BILLY shelf unit from IKEA and definitely want to securely fasten it to the wall because there is some draft in our apartment, and I want to be sure it won’t tip over. However, I’m unsure how to attach the screws without damaging the wood of the back panel or the side panels. Especially with the thinner wood panels, I’m worried the material might crack or splinter if I just start drilling with a cordless drill.

Does anyone have tips or experience on how to safely and securely mount the shelf without harming the wood? Are there specific screws, wall plugs (anchors), or techniques (like pre-drilling, using washers, or similar) that can help?

I would appreciate detailed advice that is also feasible for a DIY enthusiast. Thanks in advance!

I completely understand your concern about wanting the shelf to stand securely without worrying about damage.

I know that problem all too well, especially when the wood is thin, it’s easy to feel unsure when screwing in. My advice would be to always pre-drill a hole that is slightly smaller than the screw. This way, you can avoid the wood splitting while driving in the screw.

I’ve also had good results placing washers under the screw heads to better distribute the force and prevent the screw from pressing directly into the wood.

Regarding the screws themselves: fine-thread wood screws designed specifically for furniture assembly work well for BILLY shelves.

How exactly do you plan to attach the shelf to the wall? Do you already have a particular wall type in mind? Sometimes the quality of the wall fixings is just as important.

This is indeed a topic that requires special attention, especially with furniture that uses relatively thin panels like the BILLY bookshelf.

Here is my detailed suggestion on how you can securely attach the bookshelf to the wall without damaging the wood:

1. Preparing the bookshelf:
- Mark the spots on the back panel or the side panels (depending on where you want to fix it) where the screws will go.
- Use a drill with a wood bit that is about 0.5 to 1 mm (0.02 to 0.04 inches) smaller in diameter than your screws. This allows you to make precise pilot holes without putting too much strain on the material.

2. Control drilling depth:
- Do not drill all the way through the panel, especially if the back panel is thin. Only drill as deep as necessary to avoid creating small holes that could weaken the material.

3. Use suitable screws:
- Use wood screws with a fine thread for thinner panels, such as screws around 25 to 35 mm (1 to 1.4 inches) in length.
- Ideally, these screws have a slight taper under the head, which pulls well into the wood without pressing too hard or causing cracks.

4. Use washers or special mounting aids:
- Washers help to distribute the load over a larger area to prevent damage.

5. Wall mounting:
- Depending on your wall type (drywall/plasterboard, concrete, brick, etc.), use appropriate wall plugs. For drywall, special cavity anchors or molly bolts are recommended.

6. Assembly:
- Insert the screws gently with a cordless screwdriver. Keep the speed low and avoid applying too much torque.

Finally, if you are unsure, try testing first on an old piece of wood or similar material to see how the screws behave.

I’m also curious: exactly where do you want to secure the BILLY bookshelf? Only on the back panel or also on the sides? And what is your wall made of?

I can only agree with that.

Pre-drilling, screws with fine threads, and washers definitely help.

There’s really nothing more you need to consider.
