Slavoljubl30 Jul 2017 08:47A few months ago, I bought a Malm chest of drawers from Ikea. Unfortunately, it makes quite an annoying squeaking noise when I pull the drawers out. After some research, I suspect the metal runners are a bit dry. My question is: How can I properly lubricate the Malm chest of drawers to eliminate the squeaking without damaging the mechanism or the surface? Which lubricants are suitable, and are there specific spots I should pay special attention to? A few brief tips on preparation and application would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!
For the MALM dresser, it is best to use a dry PTFE spray or silicone spray. Simply pull the drawers out completely and spray the metal runners, then open and close the drawers several times to allow the lubricant to spread evenly. It is better to avoid oil or grease, as they tend to attract dust.
Good approach with the silicone spray! Here is a brief guide:
1. Pull the drawer out fully to expose the tracks completely.
2. Wipe the metal tracks lightly with a dry cloth to remove dust and coarse dirt.
3. Spray silicone spray or a PTFE spray evenly onto the sliding surfaces from about 20 cm (8 inches) away.
4. Slowly and evenly slide the drawer in and out until the lubricant is well distributed.
Avoid thick grease, as it tends to attract dirt and cause contamination. If squeaking occurs again after a few weeks, you can easily repeat the process. Make sure there is good ventilation while spraying.

It’s great that you’re asking here! 🙂 I had the same problem with my MALM dresser, and silicone spray worked wonders for me!! 🙂 Just spray it on, then move it back and forth a little—and the squeaking is gone!
I also find the difference really noticeable and satisfying. Sometimes it’s worth spending a bit of time to fix these small annoyances. You can do it!

Additionally, it should be noted that oil-based lubricants are not recommended because they attract dust and can cause the mechanism to become dirty over time. It is important to apply lubricant only to the sliding surfaces and to ensure that no lubricant gets on other materials, such as wood surfaces, as this could cause staining.

Lightly wipe the metal guides with a dry cloth to remove dust and coarse dirt. This is an important step. It ensures the lubricant is distributed optimally. Lubrication should also be done in well-ventilated areas, as some sprays contain solvents.
