ᐅ How can I better fit BILLY shelves into tight alcoves?

Hello everyone, I have a rather specific question about IKEA BILLY bookcases: How can I best adapt BILLY bookcases to very tight recesses when the standard depth and width are either slightly too small or just a bit too large? I want to make the most of existing recesses without compromising the stability or appearance of the bookcase. What installation methods, side panel adjustments, or possible extensions have you tried? What tips do you have to ensure both a clean fit and good functionality (e.g., with doors or additions)? I would appreciate any advice on proper trimming, alternatives for the back panel, or anchoring the unit within the recess.

Thank you for the detailed answers.
I’m still curious: If I shorten the side walls, do I also have to completely redo the pre-drilled holes for the shelves?
As an alternative idea: Is it possible to replace the back panel with a thinner plywood board to gain more interior depth if the niche is slightly narrower?
I’m looking forward to hearing if anyone here has practical experience with such modifications.

Yes, that is usually unavoidable because the holes are generally measured from the edge. If you shorten the side panels, the existing holes will no longer be in the correct position. You should mark the holes again and redrill them with a suitable drill bit (5 mm).

Regarding the back panel: replacing it with thinner plywood is possible but may reduce structural support if the panel is thinner. The back panel should be at least 3 mm thick and securely fixed close to the edges to ensure lateral rigidity.

Ultimately, I recommend carrying out all modifications carefully with precise measurements and appropriate tools to maintain load-bearing capacity and functionality.

I would like to add to the previous posts:
For tight niches, you can also opt for so-called "full customizing": instead of just trimming, build the shelf as a semi-finished module and assemble it directly in the niche. This way, you can make precise adjustments and install the back panel in multiple parts, for example, at the top and bottom or just as small strips for stabilization.

Another option is to use special adjustable shelves with elongated holes to accommodate slight misalignments in the drillings.

Finally, I recommend increasing stability by securing the unit to the ceiling or side wall – this also improves safety in narrow spaces and prevents tipping.
