Hello everyone,

I have several Malm dressers from IKEA at home, and I sometimes struggle with the drawers. Especially when they are fully loaded, the drawers are difficult to open and close, which is quite annoying. Therefore, my question to the community is: How can I make Malm drawers operate more smoothly? Are there proven methods to improve their movement, such as using lubricants, replacing the rollers, or other tricks? I am also interested in long-term solutions that reduce wear and tear. Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

Interesting question!

I always find it remarkable how often people spend hours thinking about complex electrical roll-out systems, while underestimating simple mechanical issues.

Honestly, the problem often isn’t with the drawers themselves but with the surface underneath or dust accumulation in the sliding rails. Dust and small particles cause the most friction. A simple brush followed by a bit of silicone spray can work wonders. Of course, some swear by Teflon or even graphite—but in my opinion, that’s too much effort for an issue that can be solved with clean tracks and some lubricant.

Also: Why think too broadly? You can replace the rollers in Malm drawers with better ball bearings, but that only works if you’re familiar with the mechanics. Be careful though: not every method is permanently effective—some attract more dirt and end up making things worse.

Regarding making Malm drawers easier to operate, I would like to share a brief guide that is often very helpful, especially for older drawers.

1. Remove the drawer: Pull the drawer out completely and unlock it from the runners if necessary. The runners are often easy to remove by pressing a small plastic tab.

2. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the runners and wheels from dust, hair, crumbs, etc. It is best to use a brush or a damp cloth without leaving any residue.

3. Check the wheels and runners: Inspect whether the wheels or plastic gliders are broken or heavily worn. Sometimes replacing these parts, if spares are available, can help.

4. Lubrication: For the runners, I recommend a special silicone spray or PTFE spray (Teflon). These provide residue-free lubrication, do not attract dust, and significantly improve smoothness.

5. Reassemble and test: Put everything back together and test the drawer under normal load. If it still operates stiffly, consider replacing the wheels or checking if the drawer itself is warped.

Summary: The key is thorough cleaning and using the right lubricant. Household greases or oils are often not a good idea as they attract dust and can worsen the problem.

If problems persist, I can also provide tips on where to find suitable replacement parts. Good luck!

Exactly! I would even say that 80 percent of all problems with furniture casters or tracks are due to neglect.

One more tip: For those who want to be really sure—there are also special replacement parts with improved ball bearings that can be installed without much extra effort.

A little tuning for the Malm drawers is not only practical but also fun ;-) So, if you don’t want to buy new drawers right away, you should adjust things like this.
