Hello everyone, I have a BILLY shelving unit from IKEA that has been around for several years now. Visually, it is still in good condition, but it looks somewhat outdated and plain. Therefore, I want to update its appearance, but I have a few criteria in mind: it should remain as cost-effective as possible, not compromise the stability, and ideally the shelving unit should still be usable in a flexible way – so no completely rigid modifications.

I am particularly interested in ideas on how to enhance the look of the classic BILLY shelving unit without completely renovating it. Are there any effective techniques or materials you would recommend? What do you think about films, paint finishes, or additional features like illuminated back panels?

What experiences do you have? What works well, and what doesn’t? I look forward to practical tips and maybe some creative suggestions!

That’s a good starting question. But what exactly do you mean by “visually modernize”? Because modern can mean many things – minimalist, industrial, Scandinavian, or even colorful and playful.

From experience, applying self-adhesive vinyl only provides short-term visual improvements and often carries the risk of peeling or uneven surfaces.

I would rather recommend painting with high-quality paints that renovate the cabinet and are color-coordinated with the room. Also, replacing the back panel with one that has a wood finish or metal look can significantly change its character – provided the stability is maintained.

Your point about stability is important: it should be considered not only visually but also structurally.

Exactly, here is a brief guide on how to approach this:

1. Preparation: Empty the shelf, clean it thoroughly, and sand it. A fine sandpaper (grit 220 or higher) is recommended to roughen the surface.

2. Primer: Especially for chipboard or fiberboard, a bonding primer is important to achieve a uniform surface.

3. Painting: It’s best to use acrylic or alkyd paint, depending on how durable you want the surface to be. For a matte, modern finish, a satin or matte paint works well.

4. Drying times: Important—do not apply layers on top of each other before the previous one is fully dry.

5. Optional extras: As mentioned, a back panel made of metal sheet or covered with wallpaper can create a very interesting effect. LED strips behind the back panel also highlight the shelf nicely.

Don’t forget: Any imperfections or edges should be sanded between coats for the smoothest possible finish.

If you want, I can also give you tips on suitable paints or where to source them.

LED strips placed behind the back panel really highlight the shelf.

Absolutely agree – it creates a great atmosphere. 🙂

I personally modernized my BILLY by applying a matte spray paint in dark gray and then installed an LED strip horizontally behind the front edge. This not only adds a modern touch but also provides practical lighting when the shelf is in the living room.

I also recommend replacing door fronts or even just one or two shelves with glass or acrylic panels – this breaks up the overall look and immediately makes it appear more elegant.

And for the DIY enthusiasts: new handles or knobs in a metal finish can really perfect the final look.

What do you think about films, coatings, or additional elements like illuminated back panels?

From a durability perspective, coatings are clearly the better choice compared to films. Films can deteriorate quickly due to heat, moisture, or mechanical stress.

For illuminated elements, besides the visual aspect, power consumption and installation need to be considered. LEDs are the preferred option here, as they are energy-efficient and long-lasting. During installation, make sure the wiring is neatly arranged and does not affect the stability of the shelving unit.

If the shelf is placed in a child's room or a damp area, special attention should be paid to the materials. The coating should be suitable for the specific room conditions.
