Hello everyone, I am currently considering creative and functional design ideas specifically for the IKEA Hemnes furniture line. I am interested in approaches that both enhance the classic design of the Hemnes series and allow for practical improvements or individual customizations. For example, I am thinking about color schemes, surface treatments, built-in features, or unusual uses of the furniture. Does anyone have experience or know inspiring concepts that enrich the Hemnes furniture not only visually but also in everyday use? I look forward to detailed suggestions as well as tips on materials or tools that are particularly suitable for this.
A proven design idea for Hemnes furniture is to modify the surface by sanding it and then repainting with chalk paint. Chalk paints adhere well to Hemnes surfaces and create a matte, modern finish. This allows you to easily refresh the classic white or brown colors, for example in pastel shades or rich gray variations.
- For protection, it is recommended to apply a clear varnish afterwards.
- Drawer knobs can be easily replaced with metal or wooden ones to add a personal touch.
- Interior storage can be improved by installing dividers or small baskets to better organize space.
Tools: sandpaper with a grit of 120-220, brush for chalk paint, screwdriver for handles. The whole process is relatively easy to do yourself.

A while ago, I gave my Hemnes dresser a little upgrade: new leather handles! Super simple, but the leather straps instantly add a cozy, warm touch. 🛋️ I also added some decorative stickers that can be easily removed – maybe not everyone’s taste, but for me, a nice little eye-catcher.
If you want to try it: leather straps are inexpensive, and you don’t even need tools, just a small drill if the holes for the handles are too small. It really gives classic Hemnes furniture great vibes without major modifications.

As an alternative to leather, you can also install simple metal handles in vintage or industrial style. This works particularly well with Hemnes, as the furniture is quite classic and sturdy.
Furthermore, for sideboards and display cabinets, combining with glass or mirror elements is worthwhile to create a lighter feel. By placing mirror panels behind the shelves, the storage space appears larger and brighter.
An interesting design idea is to convert Hemnes dressers into multifunctional furniture pieces. For example, by removing the top drawers and installing shelves, you can create an open storage space suitable as a desk or media station.
Accurate measurements and secure fastenings are essential. Adding cable grommets also increases the furniture’s functionality. Visually, this can be nicely highlighted with accent paint or wallpaper remnants on the back panels.
I find such combinations of design and function particularly valuable.
