ᐅ Is it possible to have gas heating without solar panels in a new build?

We are currently planning our new build and struggling with the heating system. The living area of the house is about 165 m² (1776 ft²) plus a heated basement that is rarely used. The house features KfW40-level insulation, controlled mechanical ventilation, and underfloor heating.

Originally, we wanted to install a heat pump, but the prices for heat pumps are outrageous. Even with rising gas prices (electricity prices have also increased), we wouldn’t be able to recoup the initial investment (the additional cost for an air heat pump compared to gas from various builders is around €15,000-20,000). Therefore, we are planning to go with gas heating, with the option to switch to a heat pump later on.

The KfW40 subsidy is no longer available, and I am wondering if it is possible to install a gas condensing boiler without solar thermal panels under the building energy law, given that we already have good insulation and controlled mechanical ventilation. The idea is to save costs and leave more room for photovoltaic panels in the future. Does anyone have experience with this?

Wasn't the plan to completely ban gas and oil heating systems in new buildings by now? I thought that was already decided?!

That should have been in 2025, but it is being carefully considered to bring it forward by one year.

A couple of fortunate career developments, and suddenly you have a lot of money left each month for photovoltaics and other extras. I was far too pessimistic in my budgeting when building my house.

To the original poster: The plan to start with gas and then switch to a heat pump when prices drop sounds reasonable.

Never, lol.
You would be the first homeowner who ends up with more money after building than before. (Inheritance, lottery, etc. excepted…)

I am already quite an experienced person with life insurance policies taken out decades ago. ;-) However, I also promised my husband a caravan-boat, he really wants one. 🙂

A mobile home or do you mean a houseboat?

Are you referring to a floating caravan or a houseboat?

Off topic: The caravan boat is, at least in Europe, a relatively new development from Hamburg, and it’s neither a floating caravan nor a houseboat—more like a combination of both. It’s simply amazing, amazing, amazing. 🙂 You can do everything with it, except fly... not yet. ;-) I believe this caravan boat will replace traditional caravans and trailers. From my perspective, there’s no reason to buy a caravan or trailer anymore if you can have a caravan boat. In August, there is an open house event planned in Hamburg; maybe we can manage to attend despite the house construction.

I would send you a link in a private message, but as far as I know, that’s not allowed even in private.
