ᐅ Long-Distance Domestic Move – How to Find a Moving Company?

Hello everyone!

So far, I have only moved within the nearby region using a company.
Now I have a move coming up this summer that’s about 600 km (370 miles) away.

What is the best way to search for a moving company? Should I look for one at the destination or at the original location?
How is it usually organized? Does the company load the truck the day before and then drive off early in the morning? Has anyone here done something like this before?
Our last move (40 km / 25 miles) already took almost an entire day (from about 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). If I have to add another 550 km (340 miles) on top of that, will this become a multi-day operation?

When I first moved up here, I barely had any belongings (was a student) and organized the move myself with a van. But now we definitely need a truck, and none of us can drive one.
I’d appreciate your tips and experiences.

But these worries are driving me crazy. I’m about to jump into a 3.5-ton (3.9-ton) truck and drive over to you, then make three trips back and forth, and that will be that. Although my wife might kill me then...

I’ll write an apology note for your wife then.

Nice! Problem solved! 😀

I’m afraid she would only accept one written in my blood (doesn’t matter if it’s a full moon). But I wanted to avoid that for the next 40 years...

That’s no problem. I don’t know anyone who can drive heavy trucks, but my best friend is a nurse and could draw your blood professionally. 😀

Let’s have a small forum meetup at Kati’s place, and on the way back everyone from the south can bring a few crates with them 😉

From around age 40, people usually still have a Class 3 license and are allowed to drive up to 7.5 tons (8.3 tons).

Crates with delicious Palatinate wine? ♥

My mom would probably be allowed to drive 7.5-ton (8.3-ton) trucks, but I wouldn’t necessarily trust her to do so. 😀

Unfortunately, not really.
The only people I know who have anything to do with trucks are the neighbors with the radio. 😀
I don’t know anyone well enough to ask them to help with the move. Friends and family all work in completely different fields. My best friend says she feels confident driving one of our cars, but not a panel van. I have to admit, I wouldn’t trust myself to drive a panel van on that route either—I’ve never driven one before. And these rental box vans are often involved in accidents according to statistics.
Besides, I think we’d need a proper truck. The moving company we used when we moved here had a larger truck (I don’t remember exactly how big) and a smaller one as well.

Try looking into MAWA Express… Check out their website. They only handle the driving. Loading and unloading you’ll have to do yourselves.

I find it so funny that, although I have never driven anything bigger than my small automatic Smart car, I am allowed to drive "huge" vehicles with semi-trailers, trailers, and more, while all the truly capable, experienced "guys" around me—some of whom operate forklifts—are not allowed to do so. 🙂 This often serves as a source of amusement. 🙂 I am allowed to drive trucks but can’t actually do it; others can drive but aren’t allowed. ;-)

@kati1337 Just use your mom’s driver’s license. You probably look quite similar. 😀

Being allowed to drive is quite different from being able and willing to do so.

Just get a few more quotes and then make your choice.

Basically, it makes sense that you don’t take your driving test in a Golf (or rather a Polo nowadays?) and then get to drive all kinds of vehicles. After all, a 7.5-ton (16,535 lb) truck is quite a bit larger than a Golf.
However, I find some of the rules tied to weight limits illogical. A cab-over motorhome is often also rated for 3.5 tons (7,716 lb), but it’s certainly not easy to drive. When it comes to trailers, it gets completely absurd because whether you’re allowed to tow one doesn’t depend on the trailer itself but on the vehicle pulling it. And in this case, the affordable combination of a large car towing a medium-sized trailer is prohibited. But if you load the trailer down to 750 kg (1,653 lb), suddenly you’re allowed to tow it anywhere, even if it’s a 6.5 m (21 ft) catamaran trailer behind a 7 m (23 ft) motorhome...
