Hello

Are there good retrofit smart home systems available?

We bought a semi-detached house as a new build from a developer.

The electrician declined to work with KNX and said he is not familiar with it and won’t do it.

My question is: Are there good retrofit options for smart home systems that don’t require opening up the walls (that is not an option)?

Which systems would you recommend?

Functions:

Light control
Window sensors (preferably invisible)
Shutter control
Music control
Video doorbell

It should definitely be possible to create scenes and rules.

I’m also open to other suggestions for useful functions I may not have thought of yet.

Use KNX-RF; it saves a lot of wiring and installation work. But do you really want that?

If he only uses KNX-RF, he might as well use any other wireless system. KNX-RF really makes sense when used together with a “real” KNX system, for example as a trouble-shooting solution, because it integrates very easily into the standard KNX system.

Of course, but he wanted KNX. 😉

@untergasse43 How difficult is it to program all of this yourself?

If I were to do it myself, would the standard functions already work, and I’d just need to set up the automations afterwards, or does nothing work at the beginning?

My knowledge:

I have no experience with KNX at all.

I would rate my PC skills as okay to good.
I often work with more complex formulas in Excel (I know this is probably not comparable).

So, Excel is not directly comparable in this case, but it is quite similar to logical thinking and experience in event-driven programming.

There is a free demo version of ETS.
If you still have time, you might want to try it out to see if it suits you.

Have the planning done professionally; depending on your skills, you can handle much of the execution yourself (wiring and programming).

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to do any work myself during the construction, at least not with the wiring.

The only thing I might be able to handle (if the programming is not too complicated) is the programming. If I do the programming myself, will it not work at all upon handover, or do the standard functions, like turning on lights with a button press, already work?

Which devices can you recommend that are reliable and possibly affordable (good value for money)?
