Hello dear users,
I am in discussions with a general contractor and now have a finalized, custom-designed floor plan in front of me. The house cost was roughly mentioned during the conversation (approximate price). However, the exact quote will only be calculated once the floor plan is approved to avoid unnecessary work. I want to add an extra window in one of the rooms. Therefore, my question is: What is cheaper for a general contractor, installing a window or building masonry? Does it even make a difference?
Thank you for your answers.

Windows are always expensive*. Large windows are costly because of their size, and small windows are expensive because their area is not deducted from the masonry costs – so you pay for the window in addition to the wall at that spot. However, don’t let that stop you, as long as it’s not an excessively luxurious window.
*Of course, it is possible that the costs are not passed on to the customer.

That’s why I ask: What is cheaper for a general contractor (GC)? Windows or masonry? Does it even make a difference? Basically, you asked the wrong question.
Yes, windows are more expensive starting from about 4sqm (43 sq ft). That’s what we were told. It’s not just the material cost, but also the installation or fitting that plays a role—a mixed calculation. However, this matters less to you than how the GC charges.
There are GCs or home builders like, for example, Scanhaus Marlow, Danwood, Town & Country, and many concrete/masonry builders who charge an additional fee for basically every small change. When it comes to windows, they smell profit and take it from the client.
But there are also others, like in @Golfi90’s case or ours: we were actually free to place as many windows as we wanted, including asymmetrical ones under the roof or window bands, without any extra charge.
So, in the end, you need to ask your GC what they will charge for it.
