Hello dear users,
I am in discussions with a general contractor and now have a finalized, custom-designed floor plan in front of me. The house cost was roughly mentioned during the conversation (approximate price). However, the exact quote will only be calculated once the floor plan is approved to avoid unnecessary work. I want to add an extra window in one of the rooms. Therefore, my question is: What is cheaper for a general contractor, installing a window or building masonry? Does it even make a difference?
Thank you for your answers.

That surprises me and I can’t understand it. [...] Let’s see how many windows our house will ultimately have. Of course, you can’t understand it if you relate it to the number or total size of the windows. But I was referring to the overall price allocated to the window trade. And even customers who usually know that the difference between Graceland and Peter Kaiser is not just in the price tend to prefer PVC windows in this case.

Although the post is quite old, at Heinz von Heiden floor-to-ceiling windows would have been cheaper for us than half-height windows of the same width. The argument was that masonry work would be more expensive, blah blah.
We accepted it since we did not want floor-to-ceiling windows, but it was cheeky.

You have the same issue with floor-to-ceiling windows as with windows with a sill height.
Also, a floor-to-ceiling window that is 2m (6.6 feet) tall is not twice as expensive as a 1m (3.3 feet) tall window. Yes, the glass costs more.
But the machine doesn’t really care whether it glues 2m² (22 square feet) or 1m² (11 square feet) of glass into the frame.
In the end, a company like Heinz von Heiden probably gives significant discounts to certain customers when ordering specific windows in bulk, which is why customers are pressured with premium charges to choose those options.
It doesn’t really matter. If I ask for 2,000 EUR for a cucumber, then that’s the price. If you want it, you have to pay 2,000, otherwise you don’t get the cucumber.
