Hello homeowners

I am curious to know if and what kind of security systems you use to protect your home against unwanted visitors. I am currently researching alarm systems and see there is a wide range from inexpensive to expensive. Above all, what components do your alarm systems include? Cameras, motion detectors, etc.

Since I work at night, I want my two ladies at home to be able to sleep safely, as we have a very open and visible property with only one neighbor.

What do you think about having a dog? : )
Do you see the neighbor as a help for security or as a potential security concern?

We considered getting a dog, but that idea was dropped because we don’t have the time. It’s better to skip it altogether. I see neighbors more as a security issue since they block the view of our garden and cannot see it themselves.

I was thinking more about the neighbor as a person. It wasn’t clear whether you might be concerned about the hidden location and the neighbor. Usually, the neighbor is aware when the man leaves the house.

Your main concern seems to be protecting the women from visitors, and property damage from burglary is a secondary issue—is that correct? In that case, I would at least consider connecting to a security company. They can respond very quickly in an emergency— a camera or a red alarm light probably won’t help much in that situation.

Hello!

How exactly is an alarm system supposed to provide security—especially for people?

Usually, it serves as a preliminary measure before actual forced-entry protection (resistance class WK1 and above), since every resistance class can only hold out for a certain time—until police or others arrive.

In a single-family house, protection is generally combined, meaning the system triggers when it might already be too late 😡.

For private residences, an alarm system mainly acts as a deterrent and should be (at least partially) clearly visible—whether or not it is actually operational is initially less important.

If someone isn’t deterred, especially if the property is isolated, the only effective measures are connection to the police and/or a security company, and for personal protection, a safe room. Possibly combined with emergency power or an uninterruptible power supply.

Even that won’t help much if the intruder simply rings the doorbell during the day :p.

In practice, alarm systems usually make themselves known through false alarms—which can be costly!

You can’t go wrong with a clearly visible alarm flashing light—without any additional wiring; hopefully, that will make the “visitor” move on to the neighbor 😀.

Best regards,

I have prepared something here. Site plan of the house... As mentioned, our plot is fenced off on the side facing the only neighbor, so they cannot see into our garden.

Primarily, I want something for deterrence. I have also thought about the front door. There will be an intercom system installed along with an additional lock (basically a modern chain lock).

I want to install an alarm light on the house so it can be seen from the street. Of course, it will work together with motion detectors and lighting—only in case someone enters the property.
