Hello everyone!
The paving work is coming up.
Besides the big problem of finding an affordable paver, I would like to ask for your opinions on gravel strips.
In the residential area, it’s about evenly split whether a gravel strip is installed around the house during paving or not.
It doesn’t seem to matter whether the houses have brick veneer or are rendered.
Some even skip the drainage membrane.
Could I please hear your opinions and experiences?

This can be a slurry, as described by Karsten, or a thick bitumen layer like we have, or something else. Without the dimpled membrane, the gravel might potentially puncture holes in the bitumen layer.

wiebkechristense4 Jun 2017 13:25I have now purchased waterproof slurry, which I will apply to the concrete slab before installing the dimpled membrane (more carefully than the workers did).
For the dimpled membrane, the basic version should be sufficient, but I will probably choose the manufacturer "Dörken." It was recommended to me as the material is supposed to be high quality. Somehow the price differences have to be somewhat justified.
The terrace, house entrance, and driveway to the garage will be paved flush with the house.
So, no 20 meters (65 feet) of gravel strips.
Personally, I usually find curbstones unattractive.
Many neighbors have instead set the regular paving stones in a concrete bed as an edge finish.
This has the advantage of creating a path all around the house.
Has anyone else experienced the “expensive gravel taste” from their spouse? [emoji6]
I am now also looking for decorative gravel. Haven’t found anything really suitable yet.
I would like rounded gravel in a grey-anthracite color with a minimum size of 1.5 cm (0.6 inches).

We chose granite gravel in the 40-60 mm (1.5-2.5 inches) range. It can be cleaned easily with a pressure washer.
Edit: By the way, we ended up ordering it much cheaper from Raiffeisen Baustoffe compared to the prices at the hardware store.
