Hello everyone!

We are about to start building our semi-detached house, and I measured the site plan to see how much garden space we have.
I found that we have roughly 10x10m (33x33 ft) of lawn behind the house plus about 15sqm (160 sq ft) beside the house up to the garage. I honestly can’t quite imagine how big 100sqm (1,076 sq ft) of garden actually is.

Does anyone have a similar area behind their house and can share whether it’s still possible to fit a playset for children? Or maybe even have a photo of a garden this size?

(Visually, it won’t be a problem since there is a field behind the garden with a beautiful view of Sauerland, where building is definitely not allowed for the next few decades. Also, we have about 80sqm (860 sq ft) of front yard, where I’ll probably grow some edible plants.)

I would really appreciate some input to help me imagine it better.
Best regards, FamPre

I would mark out these dimensions on an open area first; that way, you can see how large it actually is. It’s hard to get a good sense of the size from photos.

Marking out the building footprint on an open plot alone doesn’t help much. It appears much smaller than it actually is because the eye lacks a three-dimensional reference point.

From conversations with other builders, most people are surprised by how small the foundation slab actually is. When I first measured our plot on the vast construction site, I was also startled. But once you walk the area and see a second person at the other end of the plot, you get a real spatial reference. It’s even better to mark out the building using an existing house as a reference point.

I’d say 100 m² (1,076 sq ft) isn’t very spacious, but you can still fit a play structure, and if there’s open field behind the plot, it doesn’t feel too cramped. It doesn’t have to be the largest version.

Our house measures 14 x 14.5 meters (46 x 48 feet) in width. Today, the reinforcement is being installed, and on Monday the slab will be poured. I can take a photo for you today so you have a rough idea of what can fit there. I’ll also place our older child in the back corner for scale.

That already amounts to 200 m² (2,150 sq ft).

Sure, but that might give you an idea of the dimensions.
We have a 400m² (4,300 sq ft) garden, and it currently looks really small.
