ᐅ Why is shading especially important in newly constructed houses?

It is often argued that shading is especially important in new builds to prevent overheating in summer. But why is that exactly?

The insulation in a new building works both ways. Whether it’s cold or heat, the house takes much longer to adopt the outside temperature compared to an older house with poorer insulation.

Now, regarding the windows themselves. Shouldn’t solar energy pass through a less effective double-glazed window faster than through a modern triple-glazed window?

Why do many say that shading is PARTICULARLY important in new builds during summer? I would rather think the opposite: a new build is better insulated against heat from outside. Triple-glazed windows with a low U-value keep heat out better than old double-glazed windows.

Night cooling is the activated bypass mode where heat recovery is turned off. Activating the heat exchanger during the day is sometimes called "passive cooling" or "heat protection." Inside, the air is cooler than outside. When both air streams pass through the heat exchanger, the outside air transfers its energy to the exhaust air. In some cases, warmer air was even expelled outside than the outdoor air temperature.

In our case, the supply air was usually only 1-2°C (2-4°F) warmer than the exhaust air, even when the outside temperature was 10°C (18°F) higher, so the warming is noticeably slowed down.

However, you need to make sure your mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system is capable of this. Ours technically wasn't, as it only has a trap. This can lead to condensate forming on the supply air side, while some MVHR systems only have condensate drainage on the exhaust side. Since we have an enthalpy exchanger and the temperature differences aren’t too large, plus I will set a humidity protection, we are doing it anyway.

I had to remove a plug for this function, and this must also be explicitly confirmed in the program with a calculation example.

Otherwise, the condensate will flow through this hole into the exhaust area where the trap is located.

Which controlled residential ventilation system do you have?

Helios Controlled Residential Ventilation EC 500 W ET

I thought so. The 500 has it, the 300 too, but the 270 and 370 do not. And now guess which ones we have .

Great – you only realize such details later on. Also, that our controlled residential ventilation system does not have official building approval and we needed an individual permit... that took almost 4 months.

Or that they add small new features to the series that cannot be retrofitted...
