Bastel44410 May 2016 22:04Hello everyone,
I would like to ask for your advice. My wife and I are planning to build a single-family house (with a basement) with a living area of about 140 sqm (1507 sq ft). We are planning for two children.
My question is, which heating system would you recommend for us?
Additional information:
- A gas connection is available, but my wife and I are not very keen on using gas.
- A stove is planned for the living room. Every year, we have access to three cubic meters of firewood for free.
- A gable roof is planned. The roofs will be oriented southeast and southwest.
- It is still undecided whether to build to KfW 70 or KfW 55 standards. KfW 55 might be worthwhile considering the 10,000 houses program from the Free State of Bavaria.
- If built to KfW 55, a ventilation system is planned.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards

since you are probably still at a very early stage regarding the planning of the energy demand and the building structure, I would suggest postponing the specific choice of a heat generator or at least questioning it critically. Before performing steps such as a heating load calculation according to DIN EN 12831, in my opinion selecting a heat generator is not productive. You should also consider which heat distribution system you want to use.
Once the basics are established, I would neutrally evaluate all heat generation technologies. With the current situation and future planning in mind, gas is definitely an attractive fuel option. You mentioned that you and your wife “are not really fans of gas.” Is this based on specific experiences or assumptions, or what are the reasons? By excluding it, you might be ruling out an attractive option for heat generation for various reasons.
