On our property, there is an old pump cellar that has not been used for a long time. Together with our neighbors, we want to convert it into a root cellar. We have been thinking about how to design the entrance. So, I sat down again with Sweet Home 3D and visualized our ideas.

For me, the entrance would have looked simpler... without masonry steps and preferably with some wood.
Without masonry steps – what would be a suitable alternative safe means of ascent for you, especially when coming up carrying items from the basement?

Oh.. I only meant the small steps on the left and right of the entrance. 😉 The staircase itself is perfect! Nice to hear from you again..

Ah, you mean the stepped stringers framing the doorway. Yes, they really have a bit of an Egyptian decorative style ;-)

Here are a few final pictures of the completed project. The door, frame, and ground hatch were built by the neighbor. He really has a golden touch! The mound is now quite overgrown with pumpkins. The temperatures are currently stable around 19°C (66°F) near the ceiling and 17°C (63°F) near the floor. Humidity is about 90%.

Concrete steps in the entrance area, side walls, view outside to the garden

Small storage room with shelves full of blue plastic containers; pump, pipes, and hose on the floor.

It’s absolutely incredible how meticulous and detail-oriented (and how much time it must have taken ?) you put that earth cellar together. Once again: hats off and respect! I have absolutely no idea how someone manages to create something like that. I’m always amazed by projects like this, including those from other forum members 😉

Because these things are practical and the lower part being underground provides ideal storage space for root vegetables. Modern methods just can’t compete with that.
I should hang a thermometer in my old aboveground cellar sometime.
