Hello

what exactly is the difference there, besides the material of course!? Which one is "better," if you can say that?

We are planning a new build, and the offer for the roof insulation includes vapor barrier paper. Two years ago, at my brother's place we installed foil!

Thanks for any advice!

Vapor retarder paper is used in ecological house construction because it is more or less vapor permeable and is matched to the properties of natural insulation materials such as hemp fiber, coconut fiber, wood fiberboard, etc.

If you want to use mineral insulation, I would advise against it. Moisture from the interior must not escape into these insulation materials under any circumstances, for which approved PE vapor barrier membranes are more suitable.

Hello,

good, thanks. Maybe some more tips: The planned roof construction looks like this:

- Tiles
- Battens
- Soft fiber underlay boards 60mm (2.4 inches)
- Insulation between rafters 200mm (7.9 inches)
- Counter-battens on the inside
- 25–50mm (1–2 inches) insulation between the counter-battens (depending on the thickness of the battens)

The insulation between the rafters is the big question! For my brother’s house, we used Rockwool. My neighbor is currently insulating his new build and is using a “wool” from Knauf; he says it’s very easy to work with and hardly “itches” at all!

If I go to 7 building material suppliers, I get 7 different answers about what the best insulation is. 🙂

The vapor barrier is missing in the installation; it should be installed on the underside of the rafters, followed by battens fixed perpendicular (counter-battens), and then the insulation battens (UKF, under-rafter insulation) placed between the counter-battens. After that comes the final covering, such as drywall, profiled boards, etc.

Of course, every building material supplier promotes their best product. The mineral wool from Knauf is a new development. During the spinning process, an organic natural binder (according to Knauf) is added, which coats the mineral fibers. This makes the wool less prone to releasing small fibers during installation. In that respect, the wool "barely irritates the skin at all."

That’s exactly what I’m asking about—I’ve only ever heard about using a foil, but never any paper!?

For my brother’s house, we installed rigid rock wool insulation. I have to say, it was much easier to work with. Anyone who remembers the stuff from about 15 years ago knows how rough and irritating that really was!
