Hello,

We are starting our house construction in 2 weeks, and since we don’t build a house every couple of years, my wife and I wanted to find out about the current customs regarding the upcoming Topping-Out Ceremony!

Does anyone here from the area have experience with this? What do I need to organize?

Best regards
The Mahnke family

I also think it’s possible to hold a topping-out ceremony in June. By then, the topic will be settled. A topping-out ceremony is a lovely tradition, especially among carpenters, where this custom is still highly valued.

Would you really want to live in a house where there was no topping-out ceremony, no official blessing, no smashed glass, and where not even the last nail was hammered in? My topping-out ceremony was over 20 years ago, but I still remember the day clearly.
We currently have the carpenters working on the house, and it has been raining heavily all the time. Now that the weather is a bit better, we have "Corona." We will simply celebrate with friends and acquaintances later. After all, we have a responsibility towards our guests, and I can’t rule out the possibility of the virus spreading at our event.

By the way, I have never attended a topping-out ceremony myself, so I’m probably a bit more "unbiased."

Due to the current situation, we will probably postpone it. Maybe we can creatively make up for it in a few weeks or 1-2 months, and you could have a nail-driving contest or something like that.

It is more of a symbolic act. However, I would not completely forgo it. Postponing it seems appropriate and consistent.

I just assume that most people prefer not to have to use a portable toilet.

However, I’m not sure if I would attend a topping-out ceremony as a guest (this week/next week) because of "Corona"?

Corona would be a reason, yes.
But for the fact that there is "only" a portable toilet? Most people stay for 2 hours and don’t need to use it. Others don’t have to use it at all. And for those who do need to use it, it’s an adequate mobile solution for their needs.
Just make sure it’s clean inside.
Making up for it later is also good!
