What justifies an additional charge for installing tiles that differ in size from the standard 30x60cm (12x24 inches), for example, if we want to install wood-look tiles measuring 20x90cm (8x36 inches)?

Do you think that’s okay so far? Wow... if you say so? Is that your only offer?

So far, it is the only offer, yes. Regarding the installation price, I can only repeat what another tiler said. Most of the people I spoke with said they either don’t have time or that the offer isn’t bad enough to make an alternative quote worthwhile.

We are building in the Cologne area; skilled tradespeople are in short supply there. Sometimes you can’t find anyone at all, and the good ones are fully booked for months. Others can charge almost any price. It’s crazy what’s going on here.

I wouldn’t necessarily share the price of your very first offer with a potential competitor, as that could weaken your negotiating position in case of doubt ;-)

That is clear. They will only receive redacted summaries or a simplified bill of quantities.

The guy suddenly wanted to charge extra for 60x30, even though that is a standard size.

On the other hand, I just spoke with someone who said they install 40x80 at the standard price.

Just because the “unpleasant word surcharge” is involved doesn’t mean something is unfair.

Large tiles are heavier than small ones. From a certain size, you need two people to carry and align them. After all, the work should be done well, right?

Furthermore, rooms with many corners, edges, and recesses are more labor-intensive relative to their surface area—especially when dealing with large tiles. Naturally, more money must be charged, as more time is invested.

Do you prefer an opaque flat-rate offer or a spontaneous statement over the phone instead of a sincere breakdown of additional effort compared to the standard work?

I believe everyone’s eyes should shine. Those of the homeowner (before and after the work is done) and those of the craftsman. That’s how quality is achieved.

No flat-rate offer.

However, I have now spoken with several tilers who say that 60x30cm (24x12 inches) is a standard size covered by the normal installation price of €45 (plus or minus). One provider even offers to install 40x80cm (16x32 inches) tiles at no extra charge, and this is not a dubious craftsman but an established tiler specializing in designer bathrooms.

With all due respect to your skepticism! But it is not acceptable if a tradesperson explicitly quotes an installation price for tiles up to 60x30cm (24x12 inches) in their offer, but then charges a €19 surcharge for the same size later on. Telling me that this is just the effort involved is a bit simplistic. You cannot state beforehand that tiles up to 60x30cm (24x12 inches) cost €45 and then do otherwise. That is unprofessional!
