What justifies an additional charge for installing tiles that differ in size from the standard 30x60cm (12x24 inches), for example, if we want to install wood-look tiles measuring 20x90cm (8x36 inches)?

Installing your custom-sized tiles is more demanding, as much greater precision is required. Additionally, the substrate should be better prepared compared to smaller tiles. Otherwise, with 90cm (35 inch) long tiles, even the smallest height deviations will be visible.

Apart from that, your only options are to agree or to hire another tiler (who will also charge an additional fee).

Our tiler even wants to charge an extra fee for 30x60 tiles. Isn’t that unreasonable?

We even want to install 20x120cm (8x48 inches) tiles! How much extra will that cost? Although 30x60cm (12x24 inches) has become the standard by now!

He quotes a standard installation price of up to 30x60 cm (12x24 inches) at €45.50 net. The surcharge for tiles up to 45x90 cm (18x36 inches) is €19 net.

I find that acceptable so far, but he charges a lot extra for materials, site setup, 10 helper hours, waste disposal, and site clearance. For drilling holes, it’s €8.50 net.

Other tilers say the installation price mentioned in the first sentence is fine – but then without any additional costs.

Is that okay for you so far? Good grief... if you say so. Is that your only offer?
