Hello,

we are currently having tiles installed (30x60 cm (12x24 inches)). Unfortunately, in our opinion, the tiler has done a poor job. The grout lines vary between 3-6.5 mm (0.1-0.25 inches).

In some areas, it looks really bad. He explains it by deviations in the tiles, although they are very expensive.

Is it possible that such tolerances are acceptable? Or how can we argue against this?

Thanks

I am a chimney builder and tiler myself, and very meticulous. Unfortunately, the chamber of commerce (IHK) inspectors consider grout width variations of up to 3 to 5 millimeters (0.1 to 0.2 inches) and height differences of 2 to 3 millimeters (0.08 to 0.12 inches) as normal. Sad but true. It doesn’t matter how expensive the tiles are.

Example: My brother had his living room tiled because I didn't have time, using black slate imitation tiles. When I arrived, I marked at least 30 spots with tape where you could hurt yourself if you walk barefoot. Then the inspector came, and the tiler only had to replace 4 tiles, even though there were some extreme edges with 4 millimeters (0.16 inches) differences.
