Claudia5628 Aug 2011 22:24Hello,
We want to renovate the bathroom (horrible green from the late 70s) in our newly purchased used house. Since we don’t want to move the plumbing connections, we decided to keep the existing layout (to save costs), also because it is already quite practical. The bathroom will be retiled, all ceramic fixtures replaced, and the bathroom furniture is very old and must be replaced as well. Toilet, bathtub, and shower, as we have chosen them, are reasonably priced.
However, despite looking at reu*** and other online shops, we are really struggling with the cost of bathroom furniture – it feels like there is a layer of gold built in somewhere. We found a solution in the Ik** catalog, where a double sink (which we simply want) with a base cabinet, plus two mirror cabinets, two tall cabinets, and some extras like towel holders, costs around 1300 Euros (about 1400 USD), while similar furniture from a premium dual-brand manufacturer costs over 4000 Euros (about 4300 USD).
Who has experience with the quality of the Swedish products? We have looked at the items and they don’t seem to be bad. Also, in 10-15 years, when our finances allow, we could install something more upscale. Will these pieces last that long?
Best regards,
Claudia

Brombadegs29 Aug 2011 11:28Hi,
I also always pay attention to the price. I don’t understand how some people can spend 20,000 or more on a kitchen.
About eight years ago, we bought and renovated an old farmhouse. For the tiles, I focused on quality and practicality since you don’t usually retile very often.
For the bathroom furniture, I chose a set that cost €199.00. It included two tall cabinets (about 2m (6.5 ft) and narrow), a base cabinet, and a mirrored cabinet. Furniture tends to be replaced more often anyway, and bathroom furniture especially needs to withstand a lot. After seven years of use, it still looks good, but you can see some small water stains and slight swelling on the base cabinet. However, at that price, replacing it is not a big deal.
Usually, you can’t tell just by looking at expensive furniture that it actually cost that much. So what’s the downside to saving money here?
Best regards,
Bromi

About six years ago, we renovated my parents’ bathroom and, for the same reasons as you, chose the affordable provider – so far, no regrets. My father is usually very picky and not a fan of the Swedish style, but my mother found it attractive ........ 🙄 The bottom line: they still look nice and are in very good condition. So, I don’t see any reasons against it. And as you yourself mentioned, you can always upgrade later. Even if something needs to be replaced, it’s not as frustrating as with a bathroom costing $4,000. 😀
