Insulation is also very important when planning a house. On one hand, you want lots of natural light and large doors, but on the other hand, these are often the points where a lot of heat can escape from the house. Of course, there are good insulated windows available, but what about the doors? What kind of front door, garage door, and possibly back door have you installed? What criteria did you use to decide?

The width is actually the second question, as it is already fixed now, unless we want to change everything about the masonry again.
However, we have not yet agreed on the door material, as there are differing opinions.
I can already see that we will have to have one custom-made according to our preferences 🙂

I also find a solid wooden door quite good. Of course, the entrance area should consist of two leaves. A small door is sufficient for the basement.

I previously had a wooden door at the entrance, but the heat loss was significant. I always felt that cold and moisture entered the house without any barrier. That’s why I chose aluminum exterior doors.

So Kurt, it’s not that bad with wooden front doors. A solid wood door that is 40mm (1.6 inches) thick has a thermal transmittance (U-value) of about 2.2 W/(m²·K), and a solid wood door 60mm (2.4 inches) thick has a U-value of around 1.7 W/(m²·K). It also depends on the type of wood, so it can be comparable to insulated plastic doors.

The problem arises if the door has glazing that is not made of insulating glass.
