Hi, from the beginning we actually wanted to install a recessed shelf in our shower (see picture).

Unfortunately, we forgot this in all the stress.

The interior plaster is already applied, as well as the screed.

Is it still possible to create a niche in the side wall facing the storage room?

It is a non-load-bearing Ytong wall (11.5cm (4.5 inches) block) and with the plaster we have a 14cm (5.5 inches) thick wall.

We were thinking maybe about 70cm (28 inches) long, 30cm (12 inches) high (one tile height), and about 8-9cm (3-3.5 inches) deep.

Would that be possible? Especially since the plaster is already on? And without having to break through the whole wall?

Think about it.

Your profile suggests you have some craftsmanship skills.

Please be a bit more detailed.

That leaves 2.5cm (1 inch) block and 3cm (1.2 inches) plaster. That won’t work without cracks in the plaster.

Not without a lintel.

No.

Not without damaging the plaster.

That will probably happen.

The desired depth of the niche simply does not match the depth of the wall. You would need to build a drywall extension towards the shower. This, of course, narrows the width of the shower enclosure and the effort involved is considerable.
I would say this is settled.

So, if anything, have a lintel installed above the niche, break out the opening, and close it off again with a fiber cement board from the dressing room side. Repair the plaster in the dressing room, properly seal the bathroom, and tile it. It won’t work any other way.

Why not limit the depth to 5–6, then it will fit with a lintel and a 6cm (2.4 inch) Ytong block at the back.

The depth is variable and was just an idea.
So far, no counterproposal has been made, thank you.
What do you mean by putting a 6 cm (2.4 inch) Ytong block at the back? Where exactly at the back?

A 6 cm (2.4 inches) deep recess, which will also be lined, is not really practical.
