Good evening,
We have the following problem: sometimes there is a smell of marijuana or hashish in the children's room. We recently bought the house. It is a prefabricated house with a solid basement. The children's room was completely renovated, meaning new flooring, new wallpaper, and a dropped ceiling installed. This smell does not occur all the time. We cut some holes in the wall to check whether the mineral wool insulation was okay, which it is. The insulation is dry and does not smell like that. We also found no animals or anything else. Please help, as we are getting desperate. Oh, and no one in our household or the neighborhood smokes marijuana.

Something like that doesn’t exist in the neighborhood, does it?
(I recommend the ARte documentary "Im Keller" on the topic of things like that not existing)

After you have aired the room, how long does it take for the smell to return?
And just to ask awkwardly, do other people also confirm the smell?

Yes, that has already been confirmed with "yes."

After you have aired out the room, how long does it take for the smell to return?
And just to ask clearly, have other people also confirmed the smell?

It depends, sometimes there is no smell for a whole day. Other times, the smell lasts all day. Others have confirmed it as well.

I no longer know where to look.
As I said:
As long as it’s just a smell, I wouldn’t really worry, no matter where it comes from.
Only if there is smoke in the air might there also be THC present ... that shouldn’t be exposed to a child for a long time, but you can usually see that.

This is my opinion as a non-medical professional.

What about the neighboring room or the floor above? (Has this already been asked?)

I would seriously consider using a police sniffer dog, as previously suggested. Maybe this could be done as a training exercise, so everyone benefits.

Otherwise, you’ll probably be stuck playing question and answer here forever.

But definitely report back on what it turned out to be in the end.

That would certainly be an option with a good chance of success. However, the downside is that any culprit found might get into trouble. I would try to avoid that, because I think the illegality of marijuana is nonsense.
