Dear home builders,
We are currently planning to build a prefabricated single-family house. The move-in date is scheduled for May 2021.
We will be installing a luxury vinyl plank flooring. For the color choices of the kitchen, doors, and bathroom, we would ideally like to decide on the flooring now.
However, that doesn’t really make sense at this stage. If we buy the flooring now, we would have to store it for a year. If we only select the flooring now, we don’t know if it will still be available in a year or if the terms will remain the same.
Is there a right time for us to choose the flooring?
Thank you very much for your help,
Manni

Definitely not a year in advance, this isn’t an item that is hard to get. The flooring can be delivered within a few days. Then you might need a bit more later, and it might no longer be available or the color could vary slightly. Besides, in a year you might want something different—you never know.
Best regards,
Sabine

Is there a right time for us to choose a floor?Yes, just before you actually need it. The exception is if you come across remaining stock of a special flooring, for example, 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of parquet made from a unique type of wood or with unusual dimensions. “Design flooring” as such is pretty standard – so just buy it when you need it.

Buy the material when you need it. Sale prices are not one-time offers. The selection is huge.
Also consider reviewing your choice of materials – and therefore your budget allocation – again. I would be surprised if the house didn’t have a strange smell from this material during the first few months after moving in.
