Dear home builders,

We are currently planning to build a prefabricated single-family house. The move-in date is scheduled for May 2021.
We will be installing a luxury vinyl plank flooring. For the color choices of the kitchen, doors, and bathroom, we would ideally like to decide on the flooring now.
However, that doesn’t really make sense at this stage. If we buy the flooring now, we would have to store it for a year. If we only select the flooring now, we don’t know if it will still be available in a year or if the terms will remain the same.

Is there a right time for us to choose the flooring?

Thank you very much for your help,
Manni

It doesn't smell. It also doesn't have an unusual odor.

My developed olfactometer gives me different signals.
The emphasis on being plasticizer-free and odorless might make one think twice.
It’s not as if the "design floors" are the cheapest. They are currently trendy and extremely profitable. That can certainly lead to considering alternative materials.

Hampshire, if you pour Birkin hair tonic on your head once in the morning, the vinyl won’t smell anymore. Give it a try. It’s also good for your hair. Proven since the Imperial era, often used with pleasure.

So, we actually ordered our flooring well in advance of needing it, and in some cases, we even picked it up right away. For example, with the tiles, we had noticed them a long time ago (at a hardware store), and when we happened to be there for something else, they were suddenly 30% off. A friendly salesperson checked for us how often they usually offered such discounts, whether it was likely there would be another sale before we moved in… it was possible but uncertain, so we decided to go for it. In fact, there wasn’t another discount until we actually needed them. In our case, that turned out to be the right decision.

I spontaneously bought half a pallet of laminate flooring at Toom; it was clearance stock and the forklift driver had damaged it. Even after deducting the damaged pieces, it came down to €1 per square meter (€1 per square meter). It sat around for half a year before I installed it.

From that perspective, it makes sense to buy something like this.

My wife has since gotten used to the color.
