I chose the Expedit combination with a one-legged, attached desk for my living room. However, the desk depth of 80cm (31.5 inches) is too much; I only need 60cm (24 inches). Now I want to cut down the tabletop and one side panel so that one side is reduced from 80cm (31.5 inches) to 60cm (24 inches).

I understand that these are made of corrugated cardboard (sandwich construction).

I have two questions:

1. Will the desk surface still be stable with the open side after cutting?

2. Since there is a mounting point on the side for attaching to the Expedit shelf, it will probably need to be moved. Is this feasible, or would there be a lack of reinforcement there to hold the screws?

The inside of the Expedit is almost entirely hollow, so I strongly advise against sawing it, as you will most likely have to throw the whole thing away afterward.

I’m not sure what the combination looks like exactly, but if 20cm (8 inches) is too much, can’t you just place something there, like a drawer unit or books? For example, a file cabinet with a depth of 20.5cm (8 inches).

With Ikea furniture, I would expect the items to be stable as shown in the catalog — but this can change drastically if you start modifying them yourself.

I think you didn’t understand me. The desk is 80cm (31.5 inches) too deep; I don’t have that much space in this corner. So I want to reduce it to 60cm (23.6 inches).

Has anyone already cut through this sandwich construction?
