Since we have decided, contrary to our original plans, to build without shutters for various reasons, we would like to add window and patio door trim to give the house a somewhat “old-fashioned,” or nostalgic, appearance. Has anyone here added trim to their house and can share practical tips on what to watch out for?

Has anyone in the forum painted their trim themselves? (This question is less important, as we will probably order the trim pre-made.)

Are there any general recommendations on how to give our house a nostalgic charm without causing costs to skyrocket?

This is not a cost driver. The important thing for a good appearance is that the plasterer applies it smoothly, and then the painter usually finishes it with a whitewash. I can only recommend this; we did the same and it gives the house a very attractive look.

I agree, that’s important too. Simply painting it on is not good.
As for the white color... in the apartment building where I live, the main color is a slightly off-white, and the trim is gray.

Here is "ours." The house itself is 100 years old. The openings and windows are only 1 year old. The reveals are slightly raised and, in my opinion, contribute significantly to the overall look and feel. It’s hard to see in the lower photo, but I like that the color does not create a sharp contrast.

I am also interested in reveals. Can the relief be created only with plaster and applied in one plastering process together with the whole wall, or is it possible to add it afterwards, for example? Or is there thicker paint that can be used?

In our building area, this is almost standard practice (-: If you don’t have anthracite or white horror (my opinion), then you have reveals...

Look at examples in the neighborhood to decide exactly how thick you want them...
