Hello everyone, I have a KALLAX shelf unit in the hallway that unfortunately makes an unpleasant rattling noise when the doors are slammed shut. The doors are made of glass and hang somewhat loosely in the frame, which seems to amplify the sound. My question is how I can effectively prevent this rattling without making major modifications or completely rebuilding the shelf? Are there any specially designed dampers, cushions, or setup tips that could help here? I would appreciate practical and straightforward solutions!

Good morning, I’d like to provide a brief update:

The silicone buffers have been ordered; I chose the size and thickness based on the advice here (3 mm transparent). The hinges feel sturdy but have a bit of play. I plan to gently tighten them.

I will reconsider the soft-close retrofit, as it sounds like a more extensive project. Many thanks to everyone who shared tips and insights on that!

Are there any experiences regarding the durability of these silicone buffers? Do they wear out quickly?

Hello Juken, good question!

Silicone bumpers are very durable and typically last several years, even with daily use, since silicone is an elastic, tear-resistant material. UV exposure is usually not an issue here because the shelf is indoors.

Under heavy use, they may become slightly more flexible or lose some adhesion after a few years, but these bumpers are generally easy and inexpensive to replace. Just be careful not to use harsh cleaners that could damage the surface.

Your choice of 3 mm (0.12 inches) thickness is a solid one!

Nice that you’ve made a choice, Juken! 🙂 Silicone bumpers are truly little heroes against rattling issues.

Sometimes a simple solution like this is exactly what you need to live more peacefully day to day.

Hopefully, we’ll soon hear about a quiet hallway without a Kallax sound concert! 😉 Wishing you continued success.
