Hello everyone,
I recently built a new house and paved a 1 meter (3.3 feet) wide path around it, including lawn edging. Now it’s time to fill in with topsoil, which will need to be between 20 and 30 cm (8 and 12 inches) deep due to the height difference.
The question is how high to fill with soil. I have heard different opinions. Some say leave it 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 inches) below the lawn edging because the new lawn will rise over the years, which works better for robotic lawn mowers, and that if the turf grows too high it can cause issues. Others recommend filling it up to the height of the lawn edging, also because of the mower.
How did you handle this, and what are your experiences? I was thinking of leaving about 4 cm (1.6 inches) below the edging and then sowing the lawn.
Best regards

The new ground is still settling. I filled it to the same level and compacted it using a lawn roller. The top edge is now 2-5cm (1-2 inches) below the edge. This is basically problematic because a robotic lawn mower can’t mow right up to the edge. So I definitely wouldn’t go lower from the start.

I have a misalignment with a sewage manhole that I wanted to level out beforehand.
hm okay, so I guess it should be filled flush.
How does it work with the wastewater shaft? I would need to raise it to the correct level, but it shouldn’t be higher than the lawn (placed in the middle of the lawn). So, by how much lower should it be? I can’t influence how much the ground settles.

Set the shaft to the target height. To ensure a proper transition, you can a) add some fill material around the shaft to raise the level slightly; b) compact the soil more firmly around the shaft; c) gradually add soil or sand in small steps following the natural growth of the lawn; d) later, cut around the grass turf near the shaft and support it from underneath with soil.
