ᐅ Is a ceiling-mounted extractor fan sufficient? Are affordable units reliable?

Hello everyone,

After the insolvency of our general contractor and extensive defect rectification, we are slowly starting to plan again in all directions (the shell construction has already begun). Unfortunately, the budget has become tight, and we need to see if we can maintain our plans. One of many (costly) considerations is:

Can we manage with a ceiling-mounted cooker hood? (Recirculation or vented option is still open)
- The kitchen is separated from the living/dining area by a 1.76m (5 ft 9 in) double sliding door
- Ceiling height is 2.51m (8 ft 3 in)
- The kitchen countertop will be around 90cm (35 inches) high
- A soffit of about 30cm (12 inches) height is planned below the ceiling
- The cooking station is (more or less) in the middle of the room

The cooker hood would therefore need to cover about 1.30m (4 ft 3 in).

Could you give me advice on whether this reliably works at all and, if possible, if there are any "affordable" devices suitable for this? (We probably won't be able to see the kitchen designer for a few more weeks)

Quick questions: How do you come to the conclusion that the hood would be cheaper than a traditional island hood? How is the hood supposed to be operated (e.g., with a suitable induction cooktop as with Novy)?

I’m not assuming that at all – I’m just looking for more affordable alternatives. If it ultimately comes down to a classic island hood because nothing else is feasible, then so be it. But first, I want to find out whether it’s still possible to realize the original plan under the new, more challenging circumstances.

@Deliverer: please read the original post.

I don’t know what you did with that T or how. But I can only imagine it being bearable if one person does the prep and keeps handing items across, while a second person is responsible for the cooktop.

That too, but I managed quite well on my own as well...
