ᐅ Is a ceiling-mounted extractor fan sufficient? Are affordable units reliable?

jeti79Hello everyone,
After the insolvency of our general contractor and extensive defect rectification, we are slowly starting to plan again in all directions (the shell construction has already begun). Unfortunately, the budget has become tight, and we need to see if we can maintain our plans. One of many (costly) considerations is:
Can we manage with a ceiling-mounted cooker hood? (Recirculation or vented option is still open)
- The kitchen is separated from the living/dining area by a 1.76m (5 ft 9 in) double sliding door
- Ceiling height is 2.51m (8 ft 3 in)
- The kitchen countertop will be around 90cm (35 inches) high
- A soffit of about 30cm (12 inches) height is planned below the ceiling
- The cooking station is (more or less) in the middle of the room
The cooker hood would therefore need to cover about 1.30m (4 ft 3 in).
Could you give me advice on whether this reliably works at all and, if possible, if there are any "affordable" devices suitable for this? (We probably won't be able to see the kitchen designer for a few more weeks)

After the general contractor’s insolvency and a very complex defect rectification process, we are slowly starting to plan in all directions again (the shell construction has already started). Did you dismantle the previous work, or are you now referring to a different project?

If the marked area is the kitchen layout, you might want to optimize it first. Moving all the way around the peninsula to go from the prep area to the cooking area or to drain something is inconvenient.
And if by ceiling panel you mean a ceiling-mounted range hood... practical options generally start at around 1000 euros. A good recommendation is always Novy. I’ve had one for 6.5 years and am very satisfied. It works well and is quiet.

toxicmolotof16 Apr 2018 08:09I know this layout from large commercial kitchens. With 2-3 of these blocks and at least 4 chefs. There is also a sink positioned behind one of them.
Seriously, this just doesn’t work, especially because of the (half) island... I’m not sure about that. I see many possibilities for optimization. Okay, that means no cabinet would stay where it originally was, but that doesn’t matter.

Did you demolish back to the foundation, or are you talking about a different property? We demolished down to the foundation walls and started fresh from there.toxicmolotow schrieb:

I agree with kbt: The kitchen layout is quite “unusual”...The layout is not up for debate. We have already discussed it extensively in various forums. It has been tested in kitchen showrooms and deemed “good.” The discussion here is solely about the height and type of possible range hoods and affordable options that (still) work.

And if you mean a ceiling-mounted recirculating range hood with a ceiling panel… realistically, prices start around 1000 euros. A good recommendation is always Novy. I’ve had one for 6.5 years and am very satisfied. Good and quiet.Yes, exactly – there will be a 30cm (12 inch) tall boxed enclosure under the ceiling to house the hood. This results in a distance of about 1.30m (4 feet 3 inches) between the cooktop and the hood. Thanks for the tip about Novy – I’ll look it up right away!
